Metric Conversion For Your Restaurant Recipes

When you are looking for restaurant recipes online, you may run across recipes from different sources. Not all of these sources use our English Units of Measurement. I decided that it would be very helpful for the readers here to have a metric conversion table they can bookmark for future reference.

Now, before I give you guys the actual conversion table, I would just like to give you a little information on the different measurement systems. Here in America, we use the English Units of Measurement. Now this system is based on two standard units for length, the yard, and for mass (weight), the pound. Now I know some of you haven't picked up a text book in years so I'll give you a little science lesson.

Here on Earth mass and weight are relatively the same but there is a difference. Weight is basically how the gravitation of a heavenly body pulls you towards its center. Mass, on the other hand, is the density of an object divided by its volume. That's why you weigh less on the moon but your mass is constant.

Enough of that nerdy talk; let's get back to the subject. The Metric systems base unit of length is the meter and the base unit of mass (weight) is the kilogram. Again, in your hunt to find restaurant recipes, you may come across a good recipe idea and it is expressed in the metric system. Here are some of the conversions to convert that into a usable recipe.

METRIC CONVERSION
LENGTH
(Take the number in the metric units and multiply it by the figures below to convert)
MILLIMETERS X 0.04 = INCHES
CENTIMETERS X 0.4 = INCHES
METERS X 3.3 = FEET
METERS X 1.1 = YARDS
KILOMETERS X 0.6 = MILES

VOLUME
(Take the number in the metric units and multiply it by the figures below to convert)
MILLIMETERS X 0.03 = FLUID OUNCES
LITERS X 4.22 = CUPS
LITERS X 2.11 = PINTS
LITERS X 1.06 = QUARTS
LITERS X 0.26 = GALLONS

WEIGHT
(Take the number in the metric units and multiply it by the figures below to convert)
GRAMS X 0.035 = OUNCES
KILOGRAMS X 2.2 = POUNDS

METRIC EQUIVALENTS

1/8 in = 3 mm
? in = 6 mm
? in = 1.5 cm
? in = 2 cm
1 in = 2.5 cm
6 in = 15 cm
12 in (1 ft) = 30 cm
39 in = 1 m

WEIGHT

? oz = 7 g
? oz = 15 g
? oz = 20 oz
1 oz = 30 g

12 oz (1 lb) = 455 g
16 oz (1 lb) = 455 g
35 oz (2.2 LBS) = 1 kg

VOLUME

1 tbsp (? fl oz) = 15 ml
? cup (2 fl oz) = 60 ml
1/3 cup = 80 ml
? cup (4 fl oz) = 120 ml
2/3 cup = 160 ml
? cup (6 fl oz) = 180 ml
1 cup (8 fl oz) = 235 ml
1 qt (32 fl oz) = 950 ml
1 qt + 3 tbsp = 1 L
1 gal (128 fl oz) = 4 L
